I returned my MINI JCW Monday last week, in favour of a new BMW M235i. That concludes the two and a half years I have spent with the last of three MINIs I have owned in succession. How was the experience? Ignoring the other crap, the car was probably one of the most practical cars I have ever owned.
It has good acceleration - not truly quick, but quick enough to make you smirk. It has a huge boot (or trunk for you North Americans), enough to fit about three computers, a chess table and lots of other stuff at once. It is extremely light on fuel - though that being said, they nerfed the tank size so the effective range has been decreased.
It is very versatile and maneuverable in the city, however on long roads I did find it to be not a good gran cruiser. It does not have enough leg room to sit comfortably for anything over a 2 hour drive. I did some 4 hour trips, and it was manageable but not comfortable. This little critter is best in the city.
It looked great, though the colour on my particular model mostly looked just black. Not sure who came up with the idea that it was thunder grey. It did hold dirt quite well - meaning it could be filthy and not look the part too.
The HUD (only real new thing from the previous MINI) is a gimmick - it does not work at all in the day (due to my polarized glasses) and looking at it versus the instrument cluster has no advantage - so I don't care for it.
During the time I had it, it never gave me any issues. It performed well, oh wait - there was this one time where the car leaked water when it was raining and if I parked it on an incline with the rear facing downstream. MINI said it was a design flaw in the seal and promptly fixed it. Other than that - great car, exciting, fun - but now it is time to move on.
Bye bye, MINI!
